Fugue Puzzle

Fugue Puzzle subject in, four voices out

no solution yet

You give the first voice; the puzzle fills the rest. The answer is derived (tonal or real), the exposition laid out, a countersubject found by search under invertible counterpoint, the free voices filled by a harmony plan, episodes built by sequence, a pedal point, a stretto if the subject allows one, and a coda. Every column is then checked and the breaches are marked. The rule set moves the harmony from Fux to Bach to the Rimsky-Korsakov textbook to Scriabin.

Subject

Puzzle

What the solver does

1. Parse the subject; derive the answer, adjusting the head tonally when it moves between tonic and dominant.

2. Lay out the exposition in the entry order; place the countersubject in the voice that just finished.

3. Search the countersubject: consonant on the beat in both inversions, dissonance only by step, contrary motion preferred.

4. Plan the harmony beat by beat from the fixed notes, with the chord vocabulary and progression costs of the rule set.

5. Fill the free voices against that plan: no parallels, no crossing, smooth lines, leading tone undoubled.

6. Episodes by sequence to the relative and subdominant keys, a dominant pedal home, stretto if the subject fits itself, coda.

7. Check every column and every line; mark what the rule set forbids.
